ERC Project PollutedPast, led by Dr. Olalla López-Costas, aims to produce detailed data about human exposure to metal pollution during Roman and Medieval times in Iberia and Scandinavia, and compare with natural archives and contextual information. The team includes researchers of a wide variety of expertise as bioarchaeology, osteoarchaeology, paleography, paleoenvironment, isotope analyses. The project is based at Universidade de Santiago de Compostela, Spain, and secondarily at Dpt Archaeology and Classical Studies, Stockholm University, Sweden.

MAIN TASK: to address the role of metals in Roman society through written sources, with special focus on Hispania-Western Europe.
Other tasks are addressing the use of metals (lead, mercury-cinnabar-vermillion, copper, …) as treatment-cosmetic, in construction, in festivities, the relevance of those metals in Roman society, access to those metals, mining and metallurgic activities in Roman Hispania. She/he will develop links and collaboration with the other members of PollutedPast as well as leading her/him own publications.

CV

The candidate is expected to have a PhD in Classical Studies/ Ancient History focused on ancient texts. It is also desirable to prove ample experience in working in Antiquity with questions related to everyday life or lifestyle in Roman times (Late Republic- Late Roman Empire). She/he should prove to be familiarized with ancient (Greek and Roman) texts, i.e., working knowledge of ancient Latin and/or Greek. A working knowledge of Latin Epigraphy is advisable

The candidate should prove extended abilities in writing international articles, and using English for research purpose; additionally, highly developed communication skills to engage effectively with a wide-ranging audience is required.

The candidate is expected to conduct individual and collaborative research projects, as well as work as part of a team. A track record of publications in high impact international journals and Grants/Scholarships/Fellowships is desirable.

Previous collaboration/work in a multidisciplinary environment is welcomed. Previous knowledge in mining and metallurgic in Roman times is also welcomed. Some knowledge of Spanish, Swedish and/or Galicia languages will be appreciated.
